Carmel Dickinson

Programme Manager

As Programme Manager of Mi, I’m responsible for the University of Manchester’s informatics community which brings together over 500 researchers in multi-disciplinary research into all aspects of the digital world.

My role includes community building around interdisciplinary themes, exploring opportunities for capacity building and developing alliances with key stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally.

I helped set up Manchester Informatics in 2008 and have worked since then on developing our major research and innovation themes which now include Data Science, Future Cities and Digital Health.

In 2011 I had a lead role in setting up and developing Europe’s first Connected Health Ecosystem in Greater Manchester. The Ecosystem brings together stakeholders from industry, health and social care, academia and patients to accelerate the adoption of Connected Health technology for the benefit of Manchester’s citizens. There is now a whole international network of ECHAlliance Connected Health Ecosystems across Europe in China, Canada and the US – and it all started here!

I’ve been involved in a number of informatics projects including the New Mind Plus Network, the ProFouND EU thematic network and the UK Health Data Analytics Network

I’m currently responsible for coordinating the University’s involvement in the £10M Innovate UK CityVerve project developing an Internet of Things cities demonstrator in Greater Manchester.
