The Data Science Institute invites you to the next Advances in Data Science Seminar taking place on 18th June 2018. Mark Briers from the Alan Turing Institute will present 'An overview of data science within the defence and security sector.'

Abstract: The defence and security sector has always been a data rich environment, resulting in many scientific advances being published in the data science literature over the last 30 years. This talk will provide an overview of data science within the defence and security sector, detailing the key statistical and computing methodologies employed, and the research challenges currently facing the industry.

Bio: Mark Briers is the Strategic Programme Director for Defence and Security at the Alan Turing Institute, responsible for driving research and collaboration in this research area.

Mark has worked in the defence and security industry for over 16 years, directing research programmes in statistical data analysis, and leading large teams to deliver operational capability. He completed his PhD in 2007 at Cambridge University where he developed Sequential Monte Carlo based techniques for state-space filtering and smoothing. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, and a member of several committees at the Royal Statistical Society.
