Project Malawi Seminar: The School of Computer Science goes to Africa
Venue: Lecture Theatre 1.5, Kilburn Building, University of Manchester, Oxford Road
This seminar will be based on the initiative of a Computer Science team, of staff and students, together with a Master Teacher, that visited Malawi this summer to introduce computing to a group of schools in northern Malawi. It was a difficult undertaking - all computing equipment for classrooms had to be taken out by the team, schoolchildren there had no experience of computers or even keyboards, electric power was not reliable and absent from some schools, some children had little English… Nonetheless the project was a great success with schools, schoolteachers and schoolchildren all enthusiastic and fully engaged with the education provided. We have been asked by all, including the hosting charity Ripple Africa, to do “more and better” in future years.
In this seminar, we shall show some footage of our activities, members of the team will have the opportunity of talking of their experiences and we shall attempt to evaluate this sort of intervention in a very unequal world, with an opportunity to discuss the general issues involved.
There project report is available here.
