Asset Mapping connects first building for CityVerve

We are incredibly excited to announce that CityVerve is now live with its first connected building.

Last Friday, the teams at Asset Mapping and Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) worked together to connect the biomedical centre of excellence, Citylabs 1.0, to the Internet of Things (IoT).

As CEO and founder of Asset Mapping, I could not be prouder of having hit such a significant milestone. After all, this is the first technology deployment for CityVerve since launching in July – and the first time Asset Mapping has made a building smarter through its Building Management System (BMS).

Of course, the real work begins now. Currently, we are receiving a constant stream of data from the heating, cooling and ventilation systems that are connected to the BMS.

We intend to connect the energy, water and gas meters in the coming weeks, and use low cost sensors to measure things like CO2 levels, occupancy or movement inside the building.

The overall goal is to make Citylabs 1.0 more efficient in terms of energy use and maintenance costs. However, our guiding vision is to transform people’s lives by creating buildings that dynamically respond to their needs. This can be achieved in a number of ways, from having equipment up and running at all times to generating less greenhouse gas emissions.

How does Asset Mapping make buildings smart?

The term ‘smart building’ is an umbrella for such a broad range of technologies that it is difficult to give a straightforward definition.

To put it simply, Asset Mapping helps field workers run buildings better. While it is true that our technical proposition is to use state-of-the-art IoT technologies to automate certain processes, there would be no promised land of benefits if experienced field workers could not use the information to improve their day-to-day activities.

This is why how we gather data from separate equipment, systems, software packages, spreadsheets and even paperwork is as important as how we present this information to people.

We help visualise the newly unlocked data on a single pane view, so field workers can easily gain and, most importantly, act upon new insights on how their equipment is working.

We believe it is the unique combination of technology and human expertise that makes buildings smart. This is why we look forward to spending time with the operators at Citylabs 1.0, as it is they who will inevitably have the best ideas on how to improve how the building works.

How will this benefit Manchester’s citizens?

If Asset Mapping’s mission is to help operators do their jobs better, then our company vision is to help building owners evolve from being merely providers of space to providers of services, so that people can enjoy a healthier indoor environment.

In the UK, we spend an average of 20 hours a day inside buildings. Even small increases in the air quality, lighting or design can dramatically improve happiness, health and performance – this begins with improving the way buildings function as a whole..

For starters, smart buildings with greater visibility and control of equipment will experience fewer unforeseen equipment failures. This will decrease the number of office disruptions due to unplanned maintenance activities – which in turn will increase occupants’ productivity over time.

There will be benefits for the broader population too. It’s important to consider how smart buildings will help to meet ambitious energy efficiency targets by using information from the outside environment – such as weather reports or peak electricity usage hours – and dynamically adapting to the demands of the resident businesses.

This will have an undeniable positive health impact on the population, as CO2 levels in the city plummet.

In the UK, commercial buildings are responsible for over 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. Smart buildings like Citylabs 1.0 will help cut this figure thanks to the energy savings that can be achieved with data sharing initiatives as part of a smart city strategy and granular control of building equipment.

Next steps

Connecting the first building is a key milestone not just for Asset Mapping but for all of CityVerve’s partner members. It takes us closer to creating a smarter city that improves the lives of those living and working within it.

In the next two years, Asset Mapping, with MSP, Bruntwood, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester will connect a minimum of nine buildings within Manchester’s ‘Innovation District’, where the CityVerve demonstrator is located.

This really is just the beginning, and we honestly can’t wait to continue to bring tangible benefits to the people of Manchester.
