Data Science Club remit, aims and objectives

  • Discussion and dissemination of best practice in use of data science.

  • Aims to bring to together researchers interested in data science to focus on techniques and methods that cut across all disciplines.

  • DSC will bring together researchers that develop methods and techniques and those that apply these methods to their research.

  • Will be used to raise awareness of funding opportunities (nationally and internationally) and potential collaborations related to the use of data analytics/big data techniques.

  • Will be led by a small academic steering group to ensure alignment with current academic topics.

  • Flexible format with short structured talks and a discussion topic slot to encourage interaction. Still have more structured talks as part of mix. Format will evolve as we run further meetings.

  • Provide a route for IT Services to make its services, particularly skills development and support, visible to the members of the Club. IT Services/Manchester Informatics will facilitate the meetings.

  • Will meet regularly (every 2 months), with the format to be determined by the Steering Group. UMRI/Data Science Institute/Manchester Informatics to provide funding for refreshments.

  • The Club will aim to provide an environment for transfer and development of skills and capacity building for researchers across the university.

  • The membership of the club will primarily be from the university but also reach out to wider community in the region (BBC, selected commercial, public sector (Manchester City Council) regional universities etc).
